Google to drop support for IE6

Jan 30, 2010

Coming roughly 2 weeks after Google reported attacks on their servers originating from China, Google announces the withdrawal of IE6 support. The attacks used a security flaw in IE6 which has been a godsend to hackers.

Google Docs and Google sites will be the first to withdraw support according to Rajen Sheth in the official Google blog.

IE6 really is a horrible browser which quite often renders web pages incorrectly. Many web design companies use a little JavaScript to display a message to users visiting the site in IE6 warning them that they might not have a good experience with their current browser and prompting the user to upgrade.

This coupled with the Microsoft auto update feature weeds out many IE6 users, but there are still 18% of web users with IE6 and they will need to upgrade to use Google services.

Personally I use Google Chrome as my preferred browser. If you haven’t used it yet, give it a go. The Element Inspector is a godsend for developers and the latest Beta release supports extensions which are being added to every day.

It appears that YouTube is already warning IE6 users that support is to be phased out soon.

Quite right to move people away from Internet Explorer 6. Users should be careful of additional toolbars before making the change though. Some outdated third party toolbars can cause Internet Explorer 8 to crash every time it is opened. I advise people to upgrade or remove any extra toolbars first to avoid trouble.
